Packing for two climates without doubling the bag
Cold and hot in one trip is a layering problem, and layering is a system with three parts rather than a pile of clothes.

Anything that only works in one climate is occupying space for half the trip.
Wear the bulk
Boots, the insulating layer and the shell can all be worn or carried through the airport, which removes them from any weighed or measured bag. This is the single largest volume saving available on a mixed-climate trip and requires nothing but planning what you travel in. Aircraft cabins are frequently cold, so the layers are useful in transit rather than merely stored.
Coats with large internal pockets absorb electronics and documents, which are dense and would otherwise sit in the bag.
The specific gear that does not layer
Genuine cold — below freezing, for hours, outdoors — needs a proper insulated jacket, gloves and a hat, and no amount of layering thin items substitutes. Heavy rain over days needs a real waterproof with taped seams rather than a water-resistant jacket. These are the honest cases for accepting a bigger bag or for renting at the destination.
On a long trip, ski and mountain gear is widely rentable and rarely worth flying with for a short trip.
