Colour is composition, not object
The images an operator sees are false-coloured according to how strongly a material absorbs X-rays at different energies. The operator is not identifying objects by outline so much as looking for material that does not match its container. An unexplained block of uniform density is far more interesting to a screener than a complicated but legible mess.

A dense item such as a laptop battery or a camera body casts a shadow that hides whatever happens to sit behind it. That is the actual reason electronics have historically been removed from bags, rather than anything about the devices themselves.
The working rule: spreading items across a tray gives the machine separated objects instead of overlapping ones, which is the whole point of the instruction. A bag packed in layers, with metal grouped in one place, screens faster than one where everything is mixed together.
What changed with newer machines
Computed tomography scanners rotate the source around the bag and reconstruct a three-dimensional model from many projections. Because an operator can rotate that model and strip away layers, the shadow problem largely disappears. This is why some airports no longer ask for laptops or liquids to be removed while others still do.
Rollout is expensive and gradual, so rules genuinely differ between airports in one country and sometimes between lanes in one hall. Follow the signage and the staff in front of you rather than what was true at the airport you flew from last month.

Pack for the queue, not the flight
Decide before you join the queue what will have to come out, and keep those things reachable without opening the main compartment. One pouch for electronics and one for liquids turns four separate decisions into two movements at the roller.
Wearing shoes and a belt you can remove and replace quickly matters more than any argument about whether you should have to.
