Platform Height Decides Who Can Board Without Help
Whether a train has a step up from the platform depends on a decades-old infrastructure choice, and it determines boarding time, luggage handling and whether assistance is needed.

Some stations put the platform level with the train floor and some leave a climb of several steps. That difference is an infrastructure decision, and it changes the whole boarding experience.
The two heights come from different eras
Low platforms suit a network shared with freight, because tall structures beside the track restrict the width of loads that can pass and complicate freight operations.
High platforms level with the car floor were adopted where passenger service dominates and freight is absent or routed elsewhere, particularly on dense commuter systems.
Because track and platforms outlive rolling stock by generations, a network typically inherits its heights rather than choosing them, and mixed heights persist along a single route.
Level boarding changes dwell time
With a level platform, passengers walk on. With steps, each person negotiates a climb, and anyone with a suitcase or a stroller does so slowly while everyone behind waits.
Dwell time at each station is a direct component of the journey, so a route with low platforms is slower end to end even when the trains are identical.
On busy commuter services this compounds, because a train held at one station arrives late at the next, where the same delay is added again.
Accessibility depends on it entirely
A step means a wheelchair user cannot board unaided, and access has to be provided by a lift or a portable ramp operated by staff.
That equipment has to be present, working, and attended by someone who knows the passenger is traveling, which is why assistance on these routes is arranged in advance.
Level boarding removes the dependency altogether, which is why it is the goal of most modernization programs even where the cost is substantial.
Mixed heights force compromises in the train
Where a route serves both, the vehicle has to work at either height, usually through traps and steps that fold to expose one or the other.
Operating those takes crew time at every stop, and it limits which doors can be opened, which further slows boarding on a busy service.
Cars designed for one height and used on the other end up with permanent workarounds, and the compromise shows up as slower stops for the life of the equipment.
What a traveler should look for
Heavy luggage is the practical issue: a low platform means lifting bags up steps into a vestibule, and doing it while the queue behind waits.
Station diagrams rarely state the height, but the presence of a mini-platform or a marked boarding position usually signals a low-platform station with one accessible door.
Knowing which kind of station you are leaving from is worth more than knowing the car number, because it determines how much time boarding will actually take.
