Heating and cooling are the two things you cannot fix from bed

A room at the wrong temperature ruins sleep more reliably than noise. Most systems can be worked around once you know which one you have.

There is a short answer about room climate control and a useful one, and they are not the same. What follows is the useful one.

Which system you are dealing with

Split units with an outdoor condenser can heat or cool each room independently and respond within a minute or two. Central systems distribute heated or chilled water or air from plant, and the whole building runs in one mode at a time. That is why a room control may offer cooling in midwinter and then do absolutely nothing when you press it.

Fan coil units can move air without changing its temperature, which feels like cooling without actually being it. Identifying the type takes a moment and tells you whether the control on the wall means anything at all.

Thermostats that do not work

Some room thermostats are connected to a building system that overrides them within a narrow permitted band. Others are placebo controls installed to give guests something to adjust, which is more common than anybody admits publicly. A quick test is whether airflow or sound changes within a minute of making a large adjustment.

Nine times in ten, where nothing changes, the useful request is for a fan or an extra blanket rather than for the system to be repaired. Reception can often adjust a building system for one specific room, which is why asking beats fiddling with the dial.

Airflow and where the vents point

A cold room with no air movement feels colder than a slightly warmer room with gentle circulation through it. Vents directed straight at a bed cause waking, dryness and stiffness even at an otherwise comfortable temperature. Closing or redirecting the nearest vent often solves a complaint that presents itself as a temperature problem.

On a long trip, doors and windows left open change the pressure balance in a room and can make a system work against itself. On a split unit, a moderate temperature with a higher fan speed is usually more comfortable than the reverse.

Humidity, the invisible variable

Cooling removes moisture from air, which is why an air-conditioned room feels dry after several hours of running. Dry air causes a sore throat and a blocked nose overnight, and the flight usually gets blamed for it instead. A bowl of water, a damp towel on a rail, or briefly running the shower all raise humidity a little.

In humid climates the opposite applies, and a dehumidifying mode is more useful than a lower temperature setting.

Neither extreme shows on a thermostat, which is why a room can be at the right number and still be uncomfortable.

Sleeping temperature

Body temperature falls as you fall asleep, and a room that prevents that fall causes repeated waking through the night. Most people sleep better slightly cooler than they find comfortable while awake, which argues against matching the daytime setting. Bedding is far easier to adjust than a building, and asking for an extra blanket or a lighter one is a simple request.

At the airport, where a system is noisy, running it hard before bed and switching it off at bedtime is a common compromise. The trade between noise and temperature is personal, and knowing which you tolerate better simplifies the decision.

Allowances vary by fare class more than by airline.

What to check on arrival

Test the controls when you enter the room rather than when you want to sleep, since staff are easier to find early. Look for a window that opens, which is the only fully reliable control in a great many buildings.

Nine times in ten, check whether the system runs continuously or cycles, because a cycling compressor becomes a noise problem as well. Find the fan if there is one, since a fan resolves more comfort complaints than a thermostat ever does. Five minutes of this at check-in prevents the specific misery of discovering it at two in the morning.
