Heat and altitude both need a slower first day

The body adjusts to high temperatures and to thin air through gradual physiological changes, which is why arriving and immediately exerting yourself goes badly in both.

Two very different environments produce the same practical advice, and for related reasons: the body adapts to both heat and altitude over days rather than hours.

Acclimatisation is a physiological process with a timescale

Adjusting to heat involves changes in circulation, sweat production and fluid balance, which develop progressively over roughly a week of exposure.

Adjusting to altitude involves changes in breathing and in the blood's capacity to carry oxygen, which also take days and cannot be accelerated by effort.

In both cases the first day is the least adapted, and it is usually the day a traveller has planned the most activity into.

Arrival is a step change, not a gradient

Historically, people reached hot or high places slowly, and the journey provided the adaptation. Air travel removes that, delivering a body directly into conditions it has not adjusted to.

Flying into a high-altitude airport is the clearest example, since a traveller can move from sea level to considerable elevation within hours.

Where a route allows an overnight stop at an intermediate elevation, that stop does the work the journey used to do.

Exertion is what turns adaptation into a problem

Both environments are tolerable at rest and demanding under exertion, because activity generates heat and consumes oxygen, which are exactly the resources under strain.

The first day is therefore best spent doing less than feels necessary, which is a scheduling decision made when booking rather than a judgement made on the day.

Sleep is affected in both environments as well, so the first night is often poor, and a plan that assumes a rested traveller on the second morning tends to overestimate.

Fluid needs rise in heat and at altitude for different reasons, through sweating in one case and increased breathing in the other, which is why both feel dehydrating.

Symptoms are the signal to stop, not to push

Headache, nausea, unusual breathlessness and confusion at altitude, or dizziness and cessation of sweating in heat, indicate the body is not coping and are not overcome by continuing.

The response in both cases is to descend or to cool, and to seek medical help where symptoms persist or worsen. These are situations for a professional rather than for self-assessment.

Planning the itinerary around the adjustment

Putting the demanding day third rather than first costs nothing in a week-long trip and removes the mismatch between what is planned and what the body can do.

Anyone with an existing medical condition, or travelling with children or older relatives, should take advice before the trip, since the general pattern does not describe every individual.
