Why the first bag takes twenty minutes to appear

Baggage reclaim is slow because a bag travels a longer route than a passenger, through sorting, screening and a truck, before the first one reaches the belt.

Passengers reach the reclaim hall in minutes and then wait. The gap exists because the bag is completing a physically longer and more constrained journey than its owner.

The bag leaves the aircraft last

Unloading cannot begin until the aircraft is on stand, chocked and connected to ground power, with the hold doors opened by a handler who may be finishing another aircraft.

Containers or loose bags then have to be lifted out, loaded onto carts and driven across the apron to the arrivals sorting area, which can be some distance away.

None of this happens while passengers are disembarking through a jet bridge in a straight line to the terminal. The two processes run in parallel, at different speeds.

Priority tagging reorders the queue

Bags with priority tags are loaded last so they can be unloaded first, which is the whole mechanism behind priority baggage delivery. It is a stacking decision, not a faster route.

On a full aircraft the last container out may hold a hundred bags. Those passengers wait not because anything went wrong but because the hold works as a stack.

Loading order is also driven by weight distribution across the holds, so a bag checked early can end up buried under one checked late if the trim calculation required it.

Screening and sorting add a second path

Arriving bags at many airports pass through a sorting system before reaching the belt, particularly where transfer bags have to be separated from terminating ones.

Transfers are pulled out and sent towards departures, sometimes with a further screening step. That separation takes time even for the bags that are staying put.

Where the system is shared with departures, arrivals compete for the same conveyor capacity as the outbound wave, which is why reclaim slows during a busy departure bank.

The belt is sized for the terminal, not the flight

Reclaim belts have a fixed length and a fixed rate. Two wide-body arrivals allocated to the same belt will fill it, and the system throttles input to prevent bags piling up.

Waiting passengers standing at the belt edge reduce its effective capacity further, since bags cannot be collected quickly from a crowd pressed against the rail.

What actually shortens the wait

Sitting down until the first bags appear costs nothing and avoids the crush. The belt is a queue and standing at the front of it does not move it faster.

The genuine time saving is structural: a cabin bag skips the entire process. Where the trip allows it, not checking a bag removes the wait rather than shortening it.
